Abstract
590,529. Dropping fuel tanks from aircraft. MARTIN CO., G. L. March 13, 1945, No. 6274. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1944. [Class 9 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Auxiliary fuel tanks 3, 4 and 5 are detachably secured to the sides of a seaplane hull by fittings 6 so that they may be jettisioned in flight. Each fitting comprises a pin 7, Fig. 8, which engages eyes in a bracket secured to the hull and a member 10 secured to the tank, and is withdrawable into a cylinder 8 by fluidpressure means such as the hydraulic system of the seaplane or an airbottle. The cylinders 8 of the various fittings are interconnected so that the pins are withdrawn simultaneously and all three tanks dropped together. A pad is provided between the top of each tank and the hull to prevent wear. The bottoms of the tanks carry plates 16, Fig. 9, having holes 17 engaged with tapered projections 15 on,brackets 14 secured to the chine strip 13, pads 18 being provided between the tanks and the chine strip to prevent wear.
