Abstract
590,430. Screw-and-nut gearing. BESWICK, R. E. April 14, 1945, No. 9382. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] Relates to quick action nuts of the kind comprising a number of segments contained in a ring-like housing shaped to receive a key or spanner and having inclined formations engaging like formations on the segments and consists in arranging the formations in a number of spaced steps. Three segments 20, connected by springs 22a to a washer 24, have a series of inclined faces 20a engaging like faces 25a on the hexagonal housing 25 in the closed position. A relatively short axial movement brings the respective faces opposite recesses 25c, 20c for the open position. In a modification the segments are shaped as in Fig. 5 and have closing surfaces 27c, 27d and adjustably tensioned opening springs 29. Pins 34 secured by screws 35 to the housing engage recesses in the segments to prevent relative rotation and the segments are keyed together by pins 33. In a further form the segments are eccentric in the plane of rotation and engage series of spaced projections on the housing. Specification 533,450, [Group XXV], is referred to.
