Abstract

590,272. Ordnance. BURNEY, SIR C. D. Aug. 4, 1943, No. 12613. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to non-recoil guns of the kind described in Specification 586,749 having a gaschamber through which the explosion gases pass from the cartridge chamber to the atmosphere by way of one or more rearwardly-directed nozzles which produce a forward reaction to counter balance the recoil. According to the present invention, the cartridge chamber 2 is enlarged laterally to form a gas chamber 3 leading to the gas-escape nozzles 4 between which space is provided for a breech block 5 preferably of the vertically-sliding wedge type. The gun is thus readily adapted for manual loading or for automatic loading with provision for extracting a round from a magazine or belt disposed above the breech chamber and loading it into the chamber by means of a rammer travelling between the laterally - disposed nozzles. As shown, the ammunition is of the fixed type, the wall of the cartridge case 2 being perforated, but the charge may be supported by a central core rod extending from the projectile the outer surface of the charge being protected by an envelope of disruptible consumable material such as plastic film or metal foil.
