Abstract

Refined chemical pulp containing not more than 0.15 per cent of ether-extractable matter is converted to viscose, and there is added at a stage prior to completion of the shredding a cation-active amino compound at least dispersible in water, containing nitrogen having up to three valences attached to the carbon atoms and whose free base is stable in solutions of alkali metal hydroxide, said compound being added in the range 0.01 to 0.20 per cent of the weight of the dry pulp. The compound may be added to the chemical pulp. Suitable amino compounds are (1) primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl amines such as heptylamine, octylamine, (2-ethyl)hexylamine-1, decylamine, laurylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, oleylamine, octadecylamine, methyl laurylamine, dimethyl laurylamine; (2) alkyl alkanolamines such as lauryl aminoethanol, condensation products of laurylamine and glycerol chlorhydrin and dioctylamino ethanol; (3) alkyl ethers of alkanolamines such as the lauryl ether of ethanolamine and the monolauryl ether of triethanolamine in salt form; (4) alkyl cycloalkylamines such as lauryl piperidine and lauryl methyl cyclohexylamine; (5) amido amines such as the monoamides of hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine and oleic, stearic and mixed coconut fatty acids, and polyethylene polyamines partially acylated with a fatty acid of 7 to 18 carbon atoms, a number of which are specified; and (6) imidazolines such as 2-undecyl imidazoline and 2-heptadecyl-N-acetamidoethyl imidazoline. The cation - active amino compounds improve the filtration properties of the viscose, and due to the substantivity of the compounds towards cellulose they may be added to the cellulose pulp in the stock chest prior to sheet formation.
