Abstract

Rubber is improved, e.g. its solubility in benzene and gasoline is decreased, by mixing it with one or more unpolymerized unsaturated compounds, e.g. acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, styrene and maleic anhydride and copolymerizing the mixture by passage through high-pressure rolls. Catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone and trinitrobenzene, may be present. The rubber may have been degraded by milling, heating, oxidation, peptization or enhancing its degree of polymerization. The product may be vulcanized, especially in the presence of poly-alcohols, amines and polyamines.
