517,302. Synthetic rubber. ISTITUTO PER LO STUDIO DELLA GOMMA SINTERTICA. July 21, 1938, No. 21675. Convention date, July 21, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Synthetic rubber is made by polymerising in aqueous dispersion a mixture of one or more aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic diolefines with one or more hydrocarbons of the general formula CnH2n-x, where x is at least equal to 4, and in which at least one pair of conjugated double bonds is present, in the absence of other unsaturated compounds, except emulsifying agents, and coagulating the product. The hydrocarbon CnH2n-x may be aliphatic or alicyclic, or it may belong to the terpene series ; one of the double bonds may be in the alicyclic ring and the other in a side chain or both may be in the ring. Specified hydrocarbons are myrcene, #-phellandrene, #-phellandrene, #-terpinene, and 1-methyl-4-isopropenyl-1:2: 3: 6-tetrahydrobenzene. In examples (1) a dispersion of butadiene, myrcene, oleic acid and hydrogen peroxide in ammonia solution is polymerized by prolonged stirring and coagulated by means of acetic acid, and (2) a mixture of butadiene, isoprene, 1-methyl-4-isopropenyl- 1:2:3:6:-tetrahydrobenzene, diethylaminoethyloleyl amide hydrochloride, acetic and trichloracetic acids is polymerized, and coagulated by treating with acetone or a saturated solution of sodium chloride.
