512,703. Polymerization products. JOHNSON, G. W. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 18, 1938, No. 8462. [Class 2 (iii)] Rubber-like interpolymerization products are made by treating in aqueous emulsion a mixture of a butadiene hydrocarbon, e.g., butadiene, isoprene or dimethylbutadiene, and an ethylene alpha-#-dicarboxylic ester, e.g., a fumaric or maleic acid ester, with oxygen or a substance giving off oxygen as a polymerization catalyst. If desired, other organic compounds capable of polymerization under the same conditions and having an unsubstituted methylene group bound by a double carbon linkage, particularly vinyl compounds, such as vinyl chloride, vinyl esters, acrylic acid or its esters, styrene and vinyl ethers may also be present. The products may be used for making oil-proof cables or hoses ; those having a high content of butadiene hydrocarbon are suitable for automobile tyres. The products can be vulcanized and worked up with fillers, especially fibrous materials, softening agents or dye stuffs. In examples, (1) butadiene is emulsified with fumaric acid diethyl ester in an aqueous solution of. sodium hydroxyoctadecane sulphonate, and polymerized after addition of potassium persulphate ; acrylic nitrile may be added to the polymerization mixture, (2) fumaric acid dibutyl ester and isoprene are emulsified in an aqueous solution of turkey red oil and a sodium alkylated naphthalene sulphonate and polymerized with addition of potassium persulphate, (3) fumaric acid diethyl ester is emulsified with butadiene in presence of sodium oleate and polymerized with addition of potassium persulphate, and (4) the reaction product from #,#-dichlordiethylether (1 mol.) and the amines prepared from train oil by converting the acids therein into nitriles and reducing is dissolved in a mixture of fumaric acid diethylether and butadiene and emulsified and polymerized in water containing potassium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. The interpolymerization products from butadiene, fumaric acid diethyl ester and vinyl chloride, or acrylic nitrile, and from butadiene and maleic acid diethyl ester are also described.
