Abstract
Mixed polymerisates from hydrocarbons of the butadiene type and polymerizable unsaturated substances not being hydrocarbons, but containing in addition to carbon and hydrogen one or more different atoms, e.g. oxygen, nitrogen or halogen when vulcanized in the presence of finely divided carbon such as gas carbon or soot yield rubber-like products of high elasticity and strength. The quantities of the components are selected such that the butadiene hydrocarbon component is used in excess. The mixed polymerization products yield good results when the monomeric compounds are wholly or partly replaced by incompletely polymerized products. In examples, (a) butadiene and sorbic acid ethyl ester are polymerized in emulsion, or butadiene or isoprene may be polymerized with sorbic acid methyl ketone; (b) butadiene and cinnamic acid ethyl ester are polymerized in emulsion; (c) butadiene and b -methyl-g -chlorobutadiene polymerized in emulsion, the emulsifying agent in each case being diethylaminoethoxy oleic acid anilide; (d) butadiene and b -chlorobutadiene in emulsion; (e) butadiene and 3-chlorostyrene in emulsion. All the products are vulcanized in the presence of soot, and figures are given to show the qualities of the product. Specifications 349,976, 360,821, and 360,822 are referred to.ALSO:Mixed polymerizates from hydrocarbons of the butadiene type and polymerizable unsaturated substances not being hydrocarbons, but containing in addition to carbon and hydrogen one or more different atoms, e.g. oxygen, nitrogen or halogen, are prepared in emulsion form, the quantities of the components being selected such that the butadiene hydrocarbon component is used in excess.
