[Class 74 (ii)] In changing the speed of a commutator motor driven knitting-machine, the lugs on the lug chain merely prepare the machine for a change of speed by closing a contact 9 so that the attracted armature 11' of an electromagnet 11 presses an arm 13 out of engagement with an arm 14, the initiation and duration of the changed speed being thereafter determined by the arm 14 which, under the control of the cam 17 on the camshaft of the machine, rotates about a pivot 15 to open a contact 21 in a relay circuit 23 and close a contact 20, in a relay circuit 22, or vice versa. The relay associated with contact 20 causes a brush displacement motor 2 to move the brush bridge of the driving motor 1 to a position providing a lower narrowing speed previously determined by the setting of a wheel 6; and the relay associated with contact 21 causes the motor 2 to restore the brush bridge to the normal speed position. The normal knitting speed is regulated by a rod 4 which, through a lever 5 and a shaft 5<1> acts on contact arms in an apparatus 3, of the kind described in Specification 471,711. The drums are driven from the motor 2. A low speed for knitting toe and heel is set by means of a wheel 7. The cam 17 may be made in two parts movable relatively to each other to vary the duration of the lower speed and rotatable about the cam shaft to vary the moment of commencement thereof.
