Abstract

161,808. Gillier, A. March 17, 1920. Straight-bar machines.-Machines of the Cotton type and other straight-bar machines operated by traversing-bars regulated by stops are driven at a variable, speed by an electric motor so that the bars are rapidly retarded as they approach the stops, the speed being at a minimum at the moment of impact. The compound continuous-current motor employed is accelerated and retarded by cutting a rheostat m into or out of the shunt field circuit. This is done by means of a cam a on the main shaft, a<1>, which rocks a lever d and periodically closes contacts j, k. When the main shaft is shogged, the bars remain stationary: the cam a moves away from the roller f and its place is taken by a circular disc, which keeps the rheostat m in circuit by not closing the contacts j, k and thus permits the motor to run at a constant speed while, the bars are stationary. A modified form is applied to Cotton's machines in which the reciprocation of the bars is varied in extent by shifting the positions of the stops n. In order to vary the times of closing the contacts j, k in a corresponding manner, each bell crank d is mounted on a stop n and the operating cam a is given a traversing movement similar to that of the bars but of greater extent.
