Abstract

Compounds having a CH2=C< grouping are polymerized or interpolymerized at elevated temperatures in aqueous medium in presence of a peroxy compound, an emulsifying agent and a water-soluble copper salt. Monomers specified are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and propionate, acrylates, methacrylates and alphachloracrylates, trichlorethylene or maleic anhydride may be used as comonomers; as emulsifiers, alkali metal and ammonium salts of sulphonated long chain hydrocarbons, sulphonated oleic, lauric or palmitic acids, sodium or ammonium palmitates, stearates or oleates, agar-agar, gelatine, gum tragacanth or soluble starch; as peroxy-compounds, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl, succinyl and ammonium peroxides, potassium and ammonium persulphates and percarbonates. Frothing may be reduced by adding ethyl palmitate. Copper salts named are hydrated copper sulphate, cupric nitrate and chloride. Plasticisers may be added prior to polymerization. After polymerization, methyl or ethyl alcohols, magnesium or sodium chloride, lead acetate, alum or aluminium sulphite may be added to coagulate the polymer.
