[Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] To reduce wear and extend life in chainconveyer gearing, particularly for feeding tobacco in a tobacco-cutting machine as described in Specification 365,997, [Group I], the driving contact between the chain and sprocket-teeth is restricted to the last tooth on the leaving side of the chain by making the pitch of the chain and sprocket-teeth dissimilar, the former being the lesser when the sprocket drives the chain and the larger when the chain drives the sprocket, the tooth-gaps 7 in the sprocket 1 being wide enough circumferentially to prevent face-contact with the chain-teeth 6 at other points, whereby the tendency of the chain to climb the sprocketteeth as wear occurs is avoided for a long period and in addition the chain is supported tangentially against the pressure of the conveyed material adjacent both entry and leaving sides by plates 30, which fit into axially-spaced circumferential grooves in the sprocket. Arcuate sprocket tooth-crests 8 support the complementary chain-links 9 radially on the sprocket and the tooth-gaps 7 have arcuate sides joined by a flat base.
