Abstract

588,969. Thermionic valves. BHITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 29, 1943, No. 6702. Convention date, May 7, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] In a container 10 having an electrode 18 within and a lead-in conductor 15 extending through a metallic wall part, a two-part seal is provided for the conductor, one part composed of metal eyelet 31 and glass part 24 being highly resistant to the filling of the chamber 10 and the second part composed of a similar metal eyelet 33 and glass part 25 being resistant to air, each seal shielding the other from contact with the medium to which it is not specially resistant. In the rectifier shown as an example, the steel container 10 which is also the anode, contains caesium vapour. The seal 24 is formed of borosilicate-barium glass having low alkali and silica content and the metal part co-operating in the seal is a nickeliron-cobalt alloy. The container may be exhausted through tube 34 and the space between the seals may be exhausted through tube 35. This space may contain a body 41 of graphite, tin oxide or copper oxide to absorb caesium. In modified seals, a thin metal section may be interposed between conductor 15 and the sealing material 24 or 25 to relieve strain. Specification 545,426, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
