Abstract
Sulphur-containing dyestuffs are manufactured by heating a metal or metal-free phthalocyanine containing at least one -SO2Cl group with a phosphorus sulphide or with substances capable of giving rise to a phosphorus sulphide, if desired in the presence of a solvent. Cotton may be dyed in blue or green shades by immersion in solutions of the products in aqueous sodium sulphide solutions, followed by exposure to oxidizing conditions. In examples: (1) copper phthalocyanine tetra - (4) - sulphonyl chloride (obtainable by heating the potassium salt of copper phthalocyanine tetra-(4)-sulphonate with phosphorus pentachloride in nitrobenzene) is heated with phosphorus pentasulphide in nitrobenzene; (2) the sodium salt of metal-free phthalocyanine trisulphonic acid (obtainable by sulphonating metal-free phthalocyanine) is heated with phosphorus pentachloride in nitrobenzene, and the resulting solution of the trisulphonyl chloride is heated with phosphorus pentasulphide; (3) metal-free phthalocyanine trisulphonyl chloride is heated in nitrobenzene with phosphorus pentasulphide; and (4) with red phosphorus and sulphur.
