Abstract
587,692. Steering motor vehicles. BUTTERWORTH, A. J. Oct. 9, 1944, No. 19401. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A differential gear has a shroud 18 or filling member closely approaching the teeth of the . driven gears 17 and planet pinions 16 which are housed in a casing substantially filled with oil, and means for forcing an oil circulation past the meshing wheels to cause revolution of the planet pinions on their own axes in one direction or other to effect a differential drive on the driven gear wheels. As shown, the shroud has four pockets 19-22 adjacent the meshing gear teeth. An oil pump 11 is connected to a valve 12, having a port 14 leading to diametrically opposite pockets 19, 21, a port 15 leading to pockets 20, 22, and a duct leading to a drain duct 13. Thus pressure oil may be supplied to either pair of pockets 19, 21, or 20, 22, and the gears 17 driven differentially. When applied to a vehicle, particularly to a tracked or track-laying vehicle, actuation of the valve 12 effects steering. The pump, which is driven from the vehicle engine, may also be connected to the main propeller shaft or gear-box output shaft through' a freewheel device.
