586,816. Locking nuts. GODFREY, W. T. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23711. [Class 89 (i)] Nuts locked by pins passing through transverse holes in the bolts have the pins retained in place by clips surrounding the nuts. A clip 1, Fig. 6, is bent up from spring strip metal and it has an upstanding lug 2a in which the pin 2 is riveted. The side having the lug is cranked at 1b to engage the nut near the corners only and it is longer than the side of the nut so that the other sides, bent to the shape of the nut, engage only at the out-turned ends 1a. The pin may be integral with the clip being formed from an extension of the lug, bent up and rolled to circular form. In a modification, the pin is carried at 1c, Fig. 3, by a loop formed in a spring wire which may be double, as shown and welded at 1d, or may be single. The clip may surround all the sides of the nut and have diametrically opposed. lugs to engage the ends of a pin separate from the clip. The nuts may be castellated or plain. The clips may be of circular shape for use with a range of nut shapes.
