586,661. Hand sewing tools. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 13, 1944, No. 23271. [Class 112] A surgical stitching instrument having a construction generally similar to that disclosed in Specification 586,658 is capable of being provided with any one of a number of needlesupporting bars of various lengths and diameters. As shown, the mounting of the handle Ion the spool holding section 2, and the construction and arrangement of the spool, including the locking and unlocking mechanism, are generally similar to those disclosed in the Specification referred to. The tubular portion 5 carrying the needle bar 23, a small bar being shown in Fig. 1, is formed' with slots a-d any of which may engage a tongue 10 punched out of the shank of the bar. The outer end of the tubular portion 5 is slightly constricted so as resiliently to grip the needle bar which is formed with a tapered end 23c to facilitate insertion. The other end of the bar is formed with two aligned notches 25, and two aligned slots 29 in which is slidingly mounted a pin 30 fastened in the needle clamping rod 24. The needle n has an octagonal shank passing through an aperture in the rod, and is firmly gripped against notches 25 by tightening nut 27. As shown in Fig. 1, the screwed end engages threaded bore 27a. A heavier bar 123 and needle clamping rod 124 are shown in Fig. 6. In this construction, the screwed end in the handle engages bore 27b. Pin 130 is secured by solder 131, and a needle stop 132 is provided. In both construction, a thread guide 13 is provided. Different lengths of needle bar and clamping rod are available in each form.
