Abstract

586,166. Fluid - actuated valves. CARLTON, F., and SNYDER, L. L. July 4, 1944, No. 12724. Convention date, June 22,. 1943. [Class 135] A valve arrangement for preventing backflow or back-siphonage in a pipe system, such as the domestic supply of water to a building or the supply of water to an industrial plant, comprises a valve C actuated by a double diaphragm 49, 50 to control the flow from the inlet 33 through chambers 42, 611 and 88 to an outlet 122<1>. The inlet pressure acts on the diaphragm 49 to open the valve C whilst the outlet pressure from 1221 acts through a pipe 129 above the diaphragm 50 tending to close it. The effective area of diaphragm 50 is greater than diaphragm 49 so that a pressure differential is maintained across the valve. From chamber 61<1> to the outlet the flow passes a normally open valve E and a hinged check valve B, both of which close on back-flow conditions occurring, together with the valve C, the valve E being actuated by the outlet pressure acting through a pipe 130 on a diaphragm 101 against the inlet pressure on a diaphragm 104 through pipe 131, these diaphragms being secured to a tubular member 74 which carries the valve E. This member 74 also carries a relief valve F which opens to relieve any pressure in chamber 88, by leakage past check valve B, when the valve E is closed. Under these conditions an air intake valve D co-operating with the top of tube 74 is also opened to place the chamber 61<1> open 'to atmosphere through a pipe 141. Thus, any possibility of back-flow from the outlet 122<1>, which may be contaminated, to the supply line 33 is prevented. A vacuum breaking valve A for the supply line is also provided which comprises a sleeve member 18 supported by a diaphragm 16 and seating on a seat 20, and also carrying a check valve 38. The inlet pressure acts on one side of this diaphragm to maintain the valve 18 closed, but the other side of the diaphragm is open to atmosphere through openings 23 so that in the event of sub-atmospheric conditions existing in the line 33, the atmospheric pressure acts on the diaphragm 16 to open valve 18 to relieve such conditions. If any vacuum in line 33 should extend to chambers 42 and 61<1> it will be relieved by the air intake valve D.
