[Class 100 (ii)] Addressing and like machines; platen machines; impression surfaces.-An addressing or like machine comprising a platen 6, Fig. 2, carried by. a rocking arm 1 arranged above a table 2 across which embossed address-plates are fed in succession, printing being effected through an ink-ribbon, is provided with a pressure-pad carrier 7 slidably mounted on the platen 6 and actuated from the upward movement of the arm 1, whereby the effective area of the pad is changed in advance of downward movements of the arm. This enables printing to be effected from different parts of the address plates ; by disconnecting the mechanism for actuating the pad, printing may be repeated from the same area of the pad. As shown, the carrier 7 comprises a top plate 7a and guide flanges 7b, Fig. 6, pads 8, 8a being detachably mounted on the plate 7a by means of slots 13 engaging the heads of fixed screws 9 and of opposed screws 9a carried by blocks 10 slidable in guides 11 against the action of a spring 12. The carrier 7 is reciprocated on guides 6a, by a rod 27 fixed to a shaft 24 Fig. 4, coupled by a pawl 26 and ratchet 22 to a shaft 14 oscillated by a rack 18 engaging a pinion attached to the shaft 14. For repeat printing from the same pad-area, a member 29 is moved to the left along the shaft 14 whereby a pin 31 or 31a on the member raises the pawl 26 ; a slotted plate 36 fixed to the shaft 24 prevents the pins from engaging the pawl except when the carrier 7 is at either end of its stroke. A spring-pressed plate 45 bearing against a boss 43 on the shaft 24 prevents overrunning thereof. Specification 568,497 is referred to.
