Abstract
The viscosity index of a mineral lubricating oil is increased by incorporating a proportion of a copolymer of (a) styrene or a nuclear- or alpha-substitution product thereof and (b) 1.3 butadiene or a substitution product thereof. Styrene derivatives mentioned are p-methyl styrene, 2.4 dimethyl styrene, p-ethyl styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, and alpha-methyl p-methyl styrene while butadiene derivatives mentioned are 2.3 dimethyl 1.3 butadiene, isoprene, 2-butyl 1.3 butadiene and 2-chloro 1.3 butadiene. Details of suitable polymerization processes are given. The copolymer may be hydrogenated to remove unsaturation before incorporating in the mineral lubricating oil. In examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions containing the copolymers of (i) styrene and 2.3 dimethyl 1.3 butadiene, (ii) isoprene and alpha methyl p-methyl styrene, (iii) alpha methyl styrene and isoprene and (iv) isoprene and p-methyl styrene are described.ALSO:The viscosity index of a mineral lubricating oil is increased by incorporating a proportion of a copolymer of (a) styrene or a nuclear- or alpha-substitution product thereof and (b) 1.3-butadiene or a substitution product thereof. Styrene derivatives mentioned are p-methyl styrene, 2.4-dimethyl styrene, p-ethyl styrene, alpha - methyl styrene and alpha - methyl - p - methyl styrene, while butadiene derivatives mentioned are 2.3-dimethyl-1.3-butadiene, isoprene, 2 - butyl - 1.3 - butadiene and 2 - chloro-1.3-butadiene. In preparing the copolymer, the components may be mixed and copolymerized in bulk by means of elevated temperatures and a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or the components may be emulsified with water and polymerized in the presence of a peroxide or a per-salt. The copolymer may be hydrogenated to remove unsaturation before incorporating in the mineral lubricating oil. In examples: (i) a mixture of styrene and 2.3-dimethyl-1.3-butadiene is polymerized by heat in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and the copolymer after purification is added to mineral lubricating oil; (ii) isoprene and alpha-methyl-p-methyl styrene are emulsified together in aqueous sodium oleate and the emulsion heated in the presence of potassium persulphate and dodecyl mercaptan; the mixture is coagulated with salt solution and the copolymer thus obtained is dissolved in mineral lubricating oil; (iii) alpha-methyl styrene and isoprene are emulsified together with aqueous sodium oleate and the mercaptan derived from the alcohol known under the Registered Trade Mark "Lorol" and the emulsion is heated; the mixture is coagulated with brine and isopropyl alcohol and the copolymer thus obtained is dissolved, after purification, in mineral lubricating oil; (iv) isoprene and p-methyl styrene are emulsified together with aqueous sodium oleate, potassium persulphate and the "Lorol" mercaptan of (iii) above and the emulsion is heated; the mixture is coagulated with brine and the copolymer thus obtained is dissolved in mineral lubricating oil.
