Abstract
585,310. Switch contacts. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SPIVEY, W. H., and PACKMAN, P. J. Feb. 19, 1945, No. 4133. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A terminal contact for switches and accessories comprises a substantially U-shaped metal element, with the upper part of the bend a<2> flattened to form a contact surface. Mounted in slots between the legs a<1> is a bridge piece b carrying a set screw d, which secures the supply conductor c, by pressing it into a recess formed inside the bend, for example, by a tongue a<4>. The device is inserted from below into an insulating base g, which it grips by the resilience of the legs, and is positively retained by the resilient tongue a<4> snapping over the shoulder g<1>. If the material is not resilient, the tongue is pressed out after assembly. Prior to manufacture, the whole or part of the terminal contact may be coated with non-oxidizing metal such as tin, gold, or silver. The element may be stamped, or punched from strip copper, phosphor bronze, or brass, or cast or machined from rod, and may alternatively be moulded in the base. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the tongue a<4> is dispensed with, and the bridge b inserted at an angle to the ends of the legs.
