Abstract

Compositions resistant to discoloration by light comprise polystyrene or copolymers of styrene and minor quantities of other vinyl and vinylidene compounds other than those containing chlorine, and up to 5 per cent by weight of the polymeric material of an aryl glycide ether. Specified ethers are phenoxy propylene oxide, phenylethylene oxide, p - tert. - amyl phenoxypropylene oxide, phenoxybutylene oxide, hexahydro - phenoxypropylene oxide, alpha- and beta-naphthoxypropylene oxides, p-chlorophenoxypropylene oxide and phenylphenoxy propylene oxide. The composition may be prepared by addition of the aryl glycide ether to monomeric styrene and polymerization carried out by bulk, emulsion or solution procedures, or the ether may be mixed with polystyrene either before coagulation of a dispersion of polymer, or by milling into the polymer or by incorporation into a solution of polystyrene in a solvent such as benzene, toluene or xylene.
