Abstract

A coating material comprises a vinyl chloride copolymer having an average molecular weight of between 16,000 and 24,000; a plasticiser composed of di-butoxy ethyl phthalate, dibutyl mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol phthalate and butoxy glycol phthalate; and a pigment grind consisting of a pigment and a plasticiser therefor consisting substantially of di-caprylate of tri-ethylene glycol with other fatty acid esters of tri-ethylene glycol, and having the following properties: a boiling point range of 178-215 DEG C. at 2 mm. pressure, a solubility in 100 grams of water of 0.089 gms. at 25 DEG C. and a vapour pressure not exceeding 1 mm. at 28 DEG C. The copolymer preferably consists of 88.5-95 per cent by weight of vinyl chloride and the balance of vinyl acetate. A composition used as a calendar coating may also contain butyl ricinoleate and tricresyl phosphate and a further inert pigment such as calcium carbonate or china clay. When used as a knife coating, the composition may include methyl ethyl ketone and pigments such as china clay and precipitated silica gel. Fungicides such as pentachlorphenol, dihydroxy dichlorodiphenyl methane, salicyl anilide and copper naphthenate may also be added to the compositions.
