Abstract

584,899. Sewing-machines. SIGODA, V. J. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2844. [Class 112] [Also in Group VIII] A machine for trimming or pinking the edges of fabrics &c. which is described in combination with a sewing-machine for synchronous operation with the feeding and stitch-forming mechanism but may be formed as an independent unit is constructed with an intermittent feed motion for the fabric, and with cutting- mechanism which acts while the fabric is stationary to excise small portions of the edge thereof by a cutting action which starts from the edge and terminates in the apex of the extension and is followed by a second action which starts at the apex and extends to the edge. A number of layers of fabric may be cut simultaneously. As shown in Figures 2 and 8 the cutter is arranged close to the presser foot 14 of a sewing-machine, and a fixed blade 50 formed with cutting edges 52, 53, Fig. 12 is arranged under flange 15 formed on the presser foot 14. A fabric guide 60 is also used. The blade 50 co-operates with a rotary cutter 31 formed with four cutters 37, Fig. 8 driven by worm gearing from the power shaft of the sewing-machine transmitted through an inclined shaft 24 mounted in an inclined casting 5 which is offset laterally of the machine. The cutter 31 is mounted on a fixed spindle 29 secured to the underside of the casting 5, the hub 33 of the cutter being connected to a wormwheel 34 freely mounted on the spindle 29 and being pressed axially by a spring 41 acting on a plate 40 fitted with anti-friction rollers bearing on the wheel 34. The cutters 37 are formed with one edge of triangular form corresponding to the cutting-edge 53, Fig. 12 and this first cuts the fabric from the outer edge inwards, the cutting being completed by a straight edge which cuts outwards along the edge 52. The blades can move inwards against the action of the spring 41 during the cutting operation, or alternatively the cutter 50 may be moved so as to be capable of motion against spring action during the cutting operation. In a modified form of cutter, separate curing-edges 62, 63, Fig. 14, are used to co-operate with the edges 53, 52, and the feed motion is amended to correspond.
