Abstract

1461196 Sewing PFAFF INDUSTRIEMASCHINEN GmbH 13 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 11217/74 Heading D1G Frames, cutters. To make obliquely disposed piped openings in workpieces a twin needle sewing machine 7, having a cutting knife 33 disposed between the needles 12 to cut the central strip of an opening and pairs of angled knives 52, 53 for making diverging incisions in the workpiece at the ends of the central slit, has its frame provided with a pin 5 engaging a journal 4 so as to be swingable about an axis coincident with the needle bar, 10 transmission means 76- 79 coupling the knives 52, 53 to the frame so that those knives are adjusted angularly as the frame is swung to provide the necessary obliquity to the opening. The frame is provided with rollers (18 Fig. 2 not shown) engaging a curved rail (17) a clamp handle 84 being operable to secure the frame in the chosen position. The slit cutter 37 is carried on a support 37 slidable vertically on rods 42 depending from bracket 41 secured to the bed plate 20, arid is operated by a drive bar 34 mounted in the sewing machine and connected to support 37 by means (44-46, Fig. 3 not shown) accommodating the movement between sewing machine and plate 20. The oblique cutters have blades (59 Fig. 4 not shown) mounted on carriers 56, 57 pivotable about operating axes (67, 68 Fig. 4 not shown) by the linkage 76-79 which engages guide rods 72, 73 embraced by bifurcated ends (74, 75) of the carriers 56, 57. The cutters are actuated pneumatically or electromagnetically. Feed. The work is fed by a member (21, Fig. 2 not shown) operated by a cylinder (23) mounted on a shaft (25) which may be rotated by handle (26) against the action of a spring (29) to lift the feed member (21) from the upper surface of the work. The feed is varied to lock the ends of seams 13. Seams, Folding. The piping strip P is folded to a T shape by a folder 50 not further described and sewn to the workpiece W by seams 13, the knife 33 splitting the strip and producing slit 32 through which the piping edges are afterwards pushed.
