Abstract

584,606. Saw - tooth generators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Standard Electric Corporation). Nov. 24,1943, No. 19611. [Class 40 (v)] A scanning wave and marking pulse, derived from a relaxation oscillator, are applied to an oscillograph, the shape of the scanning wave being variable without affecting the repetition frequency of the oscillator. The marking pulse is used as a reference point on the cathode-ray screen trace and may be employed to synchronize the transmitter in a radiolocation system. The blocking oscillator valve V1, Fig. 3, back coupled over transformer T1, generates a marking pulse across resistance 5 when the valve conducts. The flow of anode current charges condenser 10 which discharges slowly over resistance 11 to form the scanning wave until the valve VI conducts again. The frequency of oscillation, determined by the time constant of condenser 1 and resistance 2, is substantially unaffected by changes in condenser 10 and resistance 11. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the resistance 11 and condenser 10 are fed over a resistance from the output voltage developed across resistance 5, the remote end of the condenser 10 being connected to the anode of a diode, the cathode of which is earthed. For producing a scanning voltage shorter than the period of the blocking oscillator valve V1, Fig. 8, the voltage across condenser 1 is fed through an amplifier V3 to a valve V4 normally biassed beyond cut-off by a voltage supplied to potentiometer 29. Only the positive peaks are amplified in valve V4, the resulting negative-going wave being amplified by valve V5 to produce the positive-going scanning wave-form across the anode load. The grid resistance of valve V1 consists of a pentode V2. synchronizing pulses being applied to the grid,
