Abstract

Trimethylacetonitrile is prepared by reacting hydrocyanic acid with isobutene in the vapour phase at a temperature of 330 DEG C. to 450 DEG C. A catalyst such as alumina, silica gel, activated carbon and charcoal alone or with phosphoric acid, aluminium sulphate, chromic oxide or an alkali metal cyanide may be used and also an inert diluent gas such as nitrogen, hydrogen or a hydrocarbon. In the example hydrogen cyanide and isobutene are reacted together over alumina gel.
