Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized by subjecting it to an elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of an ether containing up to 10 carbon atoms and up to 500 parts per million by volume of oxygen or a substance capable of producing oxygen. Diethyl ether in amounts of between 0.05 and 1 per cent by volume is preferred. The ether may be present as an impurity in the ethylene or may be added, e.g. by circulating the ethylene over liquid ether at a controlled temperature. Benzoyl peroxide or ammonium persulphate may be used in place of oxygen. Interpolymers may be formed with other mono-olefines, di-olefines, vinyl and vinylidene esters, unsaturated acids and their esters and anhydrides, carbon monoxide as described in Specification 583,172 and formaldehyde as described in Specification 583,173. The process may be carried out continuously. Specifications 471,590, 497,643 and 8070/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, also are referred to.
