Abstract

583,052. Linkwork ; toothed gearing. FREEMAN, W. R. May 11, 1944, No. 9012. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In means for taking up slack in linkwork, particularly that of brake - actuating mechanism, in which an arm rotates a shaft through a worm mounted in the arm engaging a worm wheel mounted on the shaft and rotatable in a hub of the arm, the worm in the arm is adjustable, for taking up slack, by a separate shaft journalled in the arm coaxially with the worm and held after adjustment by a detent. The brake shoes are actuated by a cam 3, Figs. 1, 2, on a shaft 2 to which is splined at 11 a worm wheel 10 located in a bore 8 of an arm 6 to which an actuating rod 7 is connected. The worm wheel is kept in place in the arm by a washer 15, the whole being retained on the shaft by a locking washer 15<1>. The hub of the arm has coaxial boxes 16, 17 the latter intersecting the bore 8 and supporting a worm 18 journalled on its teeth and one end of which bears against a plug 31 with snap ring 32, the other end abutting a flange 22 on the separate adjusting shaft 20 having projections adapted to engage loosely with a slot 25 in the end of the worm. The shaft 21 has a polygonal bore adapted to receive a turning wrench. The flange 22 has spaced peripheral recesses adapted to be engaged by a spring-loaded ball 27. In a modification, Fig. 4, the arrangement described above is combined with a fluid actuating motor comprising a cylinder 35 the piston 37 of which is returned by a spring 40 and is connected to the arm 6 which, with the outer end of the cam shaft, is enclosed in a casing 33. An adjusting wrench can be inserted through a hole 42 and bore 21 only when the fluid pressure motor is inactive. The hole 42 is normally closed by a springy plug 43 removed by pulling a chain 46.
