Abstract
593,333. Brakes. PRECISION DEVELOPMENTS CO., Ltd., and OLAH, G. June 14, 1945, No. 15174. [Class 103 (i)] In a magnetic friction brake, the operative air gap is automatically restored to its original value after a predetermined amount of wear has taken place. As shown, braking is effected frictionally between a rotary member 3 and a normally stationary member 7, the member 3 being integral with a sleeve 34 on the motor shaft 4 and secured by rivets 5 to an armature 6 separated by an air gap 8 from an electromagnet having coils 2. A spring 3a tends to disengage the brake. The member 7 is secured by pins 18 to a member 9 carried by a shaft 10 which is threaded into a nut 12 on the backplate of the housing 1. The member 7 is normally held against rotation by pawls 14 engaging an internally ratchet-toothed surface 13 of the member 9. The pawls 14 are spring-loaded and are so formed that whilst rotation of the members 7, 9 is prevented in the direction which, by virtue of the screw-mounting 11, 12, diminishes the air gap 8; rotation is permitted in the other direction when the brake becomes too fierce owing to the lessening of the air gap through wear of the members 3, 7. The permitted rotation of the members 7, 9 thus increases the air gap to its original value. In a modification, the sleeve 34 engages with a bellcrank lever carrying a pawl which works over teeth on a ratchet face on a gear wheel meshed with a wheel on a screw shaft corresponding to the shaft 10. When wear exceeds a certain value, the pawl rides over one tooth and, on release of the brake, the shaft 10 is correspondingly rotated.
