Abstract
Nitronitriles of the formula R1R2C(CN)-CHR3NO2 are prepared by reacting a nitro-olefin of the formula R1R2C=CR3NO2 with an alkali metal cyanide and acidifying the reaction product. R1, R2 and R3 may be hydrogen or alkyl radicals. The cyanide may be replaced in part by hydrogen cyanide and the nitro-olefin by a substance which gives rise to it, for example nitro tert-butyl alcohol. In the examples: (1) a -nitro isobutene, 1-nitro-1-propene, 2-nitro-2-butene or nitro-tert-butyl acetate is reacted with potassium cyanide and the product is acidified with hydrochloric acid giving 1-nitro-2 - cyano - 2 - methyl propane, 1 - nitro - 2 - cyano propane, 2-nitro-3-cyanobutane or 1 - nitro - 2 - cyano-2-methyl propane respectively; (2) 2-nitro-1-propene is reacted with sodium cyanide, acidified with hydrochloric acid giving 2-nitro-1-cyano propane; (3) a -nitro-isobutene is added to hydrogen cyanide and potassium cyanide in ethanol and stirred for 24 hours at 20 DEG C. 1 - Nitro - 2 -cyano-2-methylpropane is deposited on acidifying with hydrochloric acid.
