Abstract

582,354. Nailing. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and KEALL, F. B. June 29, 1944, No. 12368. [Class 89 (iii)] In a fastener-inserting machine, the reciprocating driver is operated from a rotary crank through a lever to which it is coupled by a link, the movement of the lever being further controlled by a cam to impart to the driver extra speed over the major part of its movement and less speed towards the end of its movement than would be the case if the lever were omitted. The mounting of the work-feeding awl and a construction of nail separator are also described. The driver 1, guided in a throat 7, 9 on a swinging head 11, is clamped to a carrier 5 pivoted at 13 to a link 15 which is pivoted at 17 to a crank lever 19. The lever 19 is pivoted at one end 21 on a crank arm' 23 on the main shaft 25 and is provided at the other end with a cam roll 27 engaging a cam groove 29. A link 33 having a roll 45 engaging an arcuate guideway 47 on the head 11 is pivoted at 13 to the carrier 5 and at 35 to an arm 37 pivoted on the head, so as to ensure a substantially sraight-line movement of the driver. Lugs 51, 53 on the carrier 5 co-operate with faces 55, 57 on the head 11 to prevent swinging of the carrier if the driver breaks. The awl 61 is mounted on an arm 65 slidably and universally connected to a fixed bracket 67, Fig. 4, by plates 77, 79 engaging between part-ball members 75, 85. To ensure a substantially straight-line movement of the awl during work-feeding, a rod 93, 97 is provided having universal connections 91, 101 with the arm 65 and with a spindle which is eccentrically mounted in a fixed bracket 109 to allow of adjustment. Reciprocation of the awl is effected by a rock-shaft 131, Fig. 1, connected to the arm 65 through an arm 129, link 123 and ball joints 127, 121, 117. A nail separator 137, Fig. 5, is carried by a lever 135 pivoted at 139 and operated from a face cam 163 through a roll 161 on a lever 159, a two-part rod 157, a bell-crank lever 151 and a link 145 by means of universal joints. The separator 137 is moved rearwardly by the cam 16B and forwardly by a spring 169. Specifications 4471/03, [Class 89], and 350,566 are referred to.
