Abstract

549,086. Removing lasting tacks &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). May 3, 1941, No. 5772. [Class 17 (i)] In a machine for removing lasting tacks or staples the tool is driven in a closed path at high speed, but is substantially stationary during a considerable part of each cycle to cause the tool to appear to the eye as more or less stationary, and thus facilitate the presentation of work to the tool. The tool 10 moves in an oval path between guards 28. If it clamped to a lever 44 provided with slots 72, 90 and suspended near its rear end by a link 52: Each slot is traversed by a roll on a lever actuated by a link, 64, 78, respectively, pivoted to a crank on a rapidly rotating shaft 56, the slots each having at one end a straight portion and at the other end a portion curved about the pivot of the corresponding lever. The rolls engage the curved parts of the slots at the same time, and during this periodfor say one third of each rotation of the shaft 56, or one sixteeth of a second-the tool is at rest. Persistence of vision causes the tool to appear stationary in the position of dwell and thus facilitates positioning of the work.
