W. C. MEYER CHANNEL FLAP LAYING MACHINE Filed Dec. 14, 1922 William 20 Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- WILLIAM O, MEYER, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNO'R TO UNITED SHOE MA.-
QHINERY CORPORATION, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CHANNEL-FLAP-LAYING MACHINE.
Application filed December 14, 1922. Serial No. 606,909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Channel-Flap-Laying Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to devices for laying the channel flaps of the soles of shoes and is illustrated as embodied in a well known t ,e of machine emolo in an any i b nular flap laying tool arranged to be rotated by a power driven shaft.
In operating machines of this type, it is customary for the operator to do all his work on one side of the machine and it is desirable that protection be provided for the other side of the annular tool to prevent unintentional engagement with the shoes or with the operator. to work on the right side of the machine and some prefer the left and, accordingly, it is also desirable that the tool be protected in such a manner that either side may be left unobstructed for use.
The present invention contemplates the improvement of channel flap laying ma chines of this type by providing a guard member in combination with the annular tool, the guard member being so constructed and so arranged with reference to the tool as to protect one side of the tool while leaving the other side unobstructed to facilitatethe presentation of the work. In a preferred form the guard is arranged to be reversed from one side of the tool to the other according to the preference of the operator. In the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings a standard is provided which carries a rotary shaft on which the tool is mounted and this standard has symmetrically disposed positioning parts on opposite sides of the shaft arranged to engage corresponding parts on a guard-carr ying clamp member so as to determine respectively right and left positions of the guard in mirror relation to each other.
The above and other features of the invention including specific constructions of parts and various novel combinations will Some operators prefer be apparent from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing the top part of a flap laying machine; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the guard, the tool being removed and the shaft shown in section to illustrate more clearly the alternative positions of the guard.
The illustrative machine comprises generally a standard 10 formed with bearings 12 and 14 for a rotary shaft 16 driven from any suitable source of power by a belt engaging a pulley 18. The shaft is arranged to have a slight longitudinal play in the bearings, its movement being limited by engagement of the hub of the pulley 18 with hearing 12. The shaft 16 carries an annular flap laying tool 22 mounted on a dish shaped carrier 24 secured on the front end of shaft 16. The tool and shaft are urged into forward position by a coil spring 26 engaging a collar 20 and the hub of carrier 24.
The tool 22 may take various forms according to the use for which it is intended, the particular form illustrated in the drawings being intended for use on Goodyear welt shoes. It is the intention that interchangeable tools 22 of different kinds be provided, and that a welt tool or a McKay tool or any other desired form of tool be secured to the carrier 24 for 'use with the machine as above described.
In accordance with the present invention a guard 30 is arranged to protect approximately 120 degrees of the periphery of the tool to prevent unintentional engagement with the work or with the operator. 7 It will be observed that the guard does not interfere with the use of the machine as it leaves one side of the tool entirely unobstructed.
The guard 30 is securely attached to, or is integral with, arms 32 carried by one member 34 of a clamp. Member 84 is approximately semi-cylindrical, and encircles one side of the bearing 14, its radial position, and consequently the radial position of the tool itself, being determined by engagement of one of its end surfaces 36 or 38 with ribs 40 or ribs 42 of standard 10. The ribs 40, 42 and the cooperating end surfaces 36, 38
are so relatively arranged as to locate the guard radially relatively to the tool in such a position as notto interfere with the proper presentation of the work to the tool 22 by the operator. Clamp member 34 is held in place by clamp screws 44 engaging co-oper-v atingclamp members 46 and 48.
If the guard is to be on the left hand side of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 2, .its position is determined by engagement of end surface 36 with ribs 40. If it is to be placed on the right handside of the machine as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, its position is determined by engagement of end surface 38 with ribs 42. Ribs 40 are of the same form as ribs 42, and ribs 40 and 42are arranged symmetrically on standard 10 with respect to the axis of shaft 16. End surfaces 36 andBS are arranged in such relation to guard 30 that when they engage ribs 40 or 42, as the case may be, they determine two positions of guard 30 which, as-shown in Fig. 2, are in mirror relationto one another. 7
While one form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is not my intention to limit its scope thereby or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A channel-flap laying machine having a rotary annular flap-laying tool, a 'guard constructed, andarranged to protect one side of the tool while leaving the other side un obstructed, a standard upon which the tool I is mounted, a clamp for rigidly but removably securing the guard to the standarchand cooperating portions on the clamp and standard fordetermining the al'ilCllELl position of theguard relatively to the tool.
2. A channel-flap laying machine having a rotary annular flap-laying .tool and a guard which is constructedand arranged to protect one side of the tool While leaving the other side unobstructed and which is reversible from one side of the tool to the other.
'3. A channel-flap laying machine having, in combinatioma standard, an annular flaplaying tool mounted for rotation in the ,standard, and a guard constructed and arranged to protect one side .of the tool while leaving the other side unobstructed, the
guard and standard being formed with two sets of positioning and engaging portions to determine respectively right and left positions of the guard in mirror relation to each other.
4. A channel flap-laying machine having, in combination, a standard having symmetrically disposed positioning parts on opposite sides, a rotary shaft carried by the standard between said parts, an annular flap-laying tool secured to the shaft to be rotated thereby, a guardconstructed and ar ranged to protect one side of the tool while leaving the other side unobstructed, and a clamp member carrying the guard and coir structed and arranged to be clamped to the standard and having positioning parts to be engaged alternatively with'either of the symmetrically dispose-d parts of the stand ard to hold-the guard about-either the right or the left side of the tool.
5. A channel flap laying machine having, in combination, a standard provided with a bearing, a shaft journaled in said bearing, an annular flap laying tool secured to the shaft to be rotated thereby, a guard constructed and arranged to protect a portion of the tool atone side of the axis of rota.- tion of the tool while leaving the tool. unobstructed at the opposite side of said axis, a member carrying the guard and adapted to encircle said bearing, means for detachably securing said member to the bearing, and a positioning portionon .the said .men
her for engaging with the standard to de termine the radial .positionof the guard relatively to the tool.
I '6. ,A' reversibleguard'for a rotary tool journaled in a bearing having projecting portions symmetrically disposed with re-.
spect to the axis of the .tool comprising a member shaped to protect one side of the tool while leaving the other side of the tool unobstructed, a clamp carried by said .mem-
berand adapted to encircle the bearing, and
position ing. surfaces symmetricall 1 arranged relatively to the axis of the clamp for .cooperation with the projecting ,portionsof the bearing to locate the tool protecting vmember in similar positions at opposite sides of the tool.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
KVILLIAM O. MEYER.
