582,306. Self-tapping screws. FAN DISC, Ltd., BAEDEKER, A. E., and KILLEEN, L. W. Sept 13, 1944, No. 17536. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] Self-tapping screws have a tapered leading end in which a number of longitudinal grooves, preferably not less than four, are cut, the sides of the grooves 14 that form the leading edges of the intervening ribs being so inclined to a radial plane that a continuation would pass to that side of the axis which is towards the groove. The other sides 16 of the groove are preferably tangential to the core. The grooves are cut by a broaching-die relieved to form a substantially spherical part 17. The throat 19 is short, has teeth 21 corresponding to the grooves to be cut, and is followed by a clearance bore 20. The threads of the screws are preferably rolled and after grooving are hardened, preferably case-hardened, round the tapping part.
