582,209. Surveying instruments. GUDMUNDSON, J. E. March 7, 1944, No. 4197. Convention date, April 13, 1943. [Class 97 (ii)] A pendulous mirror 1 is mounted in an oponsided frame 6 carried by a staff or tripod 8 and fitted with a circular level 12 to enable the instrument to be correctly set. A datum line on the mirror aligned with the upper edge of the trunnion 2 is sighted so as to bisect the image of the pupil of the eye of the observer and the upper edge of the trunnion can then be aligned with a sighting line 25 on a target 24 carried by a distant levelling staff 21. The mirror frame is slidable into a casing 7 and adjusting means are provided for the weighted lower end of the mirror to enable it to be set vertical or to a predetermined angle. The levelling staff is in three telescopic sections, the mid-section 19 being graduated from the top downwardly, the bottom section 20 having graduations extending upwardly and downwardly from a zero-line and the top section 21 being graduated from the top downwardly.
