Abstract
968, 640. Sighting instruments. S.H.F. SARL. July 12, 1963 [July 13, 1962], No. 26960/62. Heading G1F. A surveying instrument comprises an opentopped box 1 with a detachable lid 2, a mirror 10 being adjustably mounted substantially horizontally in the box 1 with a spirit level 11 on its mounting enabling the mirror to be adjusted to a true horizontal position, the lid 2 having a target 14 marked thereon on its underside the target being of identical shape to that of the mirror 10, and having twice the linear dimensions thereof, the target having a central aperture 15 which also passes through the lid. The mirror is mounted in a table 8 and has a central spot-target 20. The table 8 is mounted on a ball and socket joint 6, 7, and carries a mounting 12 for the spirit level 11, the mounting being adjustable relative to the table by screws 13 in calibrating the instrument. In use, if it is desired to locate a point B on a beam 16 vertically above a point A on a beam 17, then an arrow 18 on the table 8 is placed adjacent the point A, the table having been previously levelled using the level 11. The lid 2 is placed adjacent the beam 16 and the image 14<1> of the target 14 is viewed through the aperture 15. The lid 2 is manipulated until the image 14<1> is framed exactly by the mirror 10. An arrow 19 on the lid 2 then indicates the point B. The mounting for the table may alternatively use levelling screws, a lockable gimbal system, or a free suspension system for the table with suitable damping. The centre of the mirror may be transparent and the base of the box 1 may have a corresponding hole so that a ground point may be seen from above. The box and lid may be of any shape provided the target 14 is twice the size of the mirror 10. The target 14 may be luminous, and a telescope may be fitted over the aperture 15. The box and lid may each be provided with an extensible rule to enable the box or lid to be spaced a known distance from a wall.
