Abstract
582,142. Radiators for motor vehicles; giUed tubes for heat-exchangers. BARNA, I. Jan. 3, 1944, No. 96. [Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] A bullet-proof radiator comprises spaced tubes through which a cooling liquid circulates, heat transfer elements secured to the tubes, and spaced deflector bodies which extend forwardly from the front ends of the tubes to protect those tubes against direct impact by projectiles, and are so arranged that projectiles entering the air spaces between the tubes can only hit the tubes at a small non-injurious angle. In the form shown, the radiator comprises headers H, K and vertical tubes A<1>, A<2>, A<3> of elongated horizontal cross-section, and is protected by vertical bars B<1>, B<2> B<3> arranged one in front of each tube and attached to a frame P, Q of armour-plate which fits over and protects the headers and sides of the tubes. The tubes are made of armour-plate, and, with the bars, are so spaced apart and the bars are of such depth from back to front that any bullet passing between the'bars can strike a tube only at an angle too small for the tube to be pierced. In another form, the tubes are each replaced by three tubes of elongated crosssection. These tubes may be formed of or sheathed in armour plating. Further protection for the engine may be provided by a shield behind the radiator. The frame P, Q is attached by brackets Z to a vehicle chassis, and the radiator is resiliently mounted within the frame. The bars as shown are of elongated horizontal cross-section, with V-shaped grooves at .their rear edges to receive the front ends of the tubes, but may be of semi-circular, polygonal, oval, triangular or streamlined cross-section. The heat-transfer elements between the tubes may be inclined metal strips L from which louvres L' are cut and bent, parallel horizontal strips, or needle-like projections arranged in rows. The heat-transfer elements may be flat or corrugated.
