Abstract

581,575. Interconversion of rotary and reciprocating motion. SANDERS, A. F., and MORGAN, W. May 18,1944, No. 17651/43. [Class 80 (iii)] Mechanism for the interconversion of motion between reciprocable and rotatable members having mutually perpendicular axes, comprises a connecting rod 24, Fig. 1, pivoted at 25 to the reciprocating member and having sliding engagement at 23, 23, with intersecting transverse guideways A, B, in the rotatable member 20, the connecting rod 25 also having a pin-andslot or like connection 26 with an auxiliary shaft (not shown) the axis of which is parallel to the axis of the rotatable member 20. Thus one revolution of the member 20 produces four strokes of the reciprocating member and two revolutions of the auxiliary shaft. The connecting rod may have a third pin 28 slidable in a guideway C, Fig. 4, bisecting the guideways A, B. In this case the pins 23, 28, are equidistant from the centre point of the line joining the two pins 23 and the pin 25 must be capable of lateral movement. The pin 28 may be on the side of the line 23, 23 remote from the pin 25 or pins 28 may be arranged on each side of the said line. The guideways may not be rectilinear or at right angles to one another and need not pass through the axis of the rotatable member 20. The axis of the reciprocable member also may be offset from the axis of the member 20. Thus if the mechanism is embodied in an internal-combustion engine periodic variations occur in the stroke length or mean piston speed, e.g., the suction stroke may be of longer length than the working stroke. If the pin 26 for the auxiliary shaft is midway between the two pins 23 it may have a crank connection with the auxiliary shaft. In a modification, the pins 23, 23, 25, 26 are all in line.
