581,496. Racquet strings. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 9, 1944, No. 11057. Convention date, June 11, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 109] A racquet string comprises a cord formed of a synthetic linear condensation product and composed of strands twisted together, each strand consisting of filaments twisted together, the cord having an adherent abrasion-resistant and fatigue-resistant coating. Both the cord core and the coating may be formed of a synthetic superpolyamide, such as polyhexamethylene adipamide, and the coating may constitute from 20 per cent. to 40 per cent. by weight of the cord. In one method of making the string, six 210-denier 1-turn S-filaments are twisted together 6.2 turns S to form a strand, and six such strands are twisted together 2.7-turns Z to form the cord. The coating is applied in a number of separate coats, and the coating solution consists of an interpolyamide prepared from hexamethylenediammonium adipate, hexamethylenediammonium sebacate and caprolactam. The polyhexamethylene adipamide forming the cord may be treated in the relaxed condition with boiling water or with aqueous phenol to improve the impact strength.
