Abstract

A mixture of styrene and a preponderating amount of butadiene-1.3, or its homologues, or mixtures thereof, is polymerized in aqueous medium in the presence of persulphuric acid or a water-soluble persulphate and also of an organic sulphoxide of formula RSOR1, where R and R1 are the same or different hydrocarbon radicles which may be substituted, provided the substituent does not inhibit polymerization. Preferably, at least one of R and R1 is a lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radical; specified are dimethyl, diethyl, butyl ethyl, p-tolyl ethyl, dodecyl ethyl, b b 1-dihydroxydiethyl and b b 1-dicarboxydiethyl sulphoxides. Homologues of butadiene-1.3 specified include 2-methyl-butadiene - 1.3 and 2.3 - dimethyl - butadiene - 1.3. Minor amounts of other polymerizable unsaturated compounds may also be present in the polymerization mixture. The mixture may be dispersed or dissolved in the aqueous medium, and suitable emulsifying agents are soaps, e.g. sodium stearate, water-soluble salts of sulphonated animal and vegetable fats and oils, water-soluble salts of sulphuric esters of the so-called fatty alcohols, and water-soluble colloidal materials, e.g. cellulose ethers. In an example, a mixture of styrene butadiene, water, the sodium salt of sulphated sperm oil alcohols, sodium hydroxide, ammonium persulphate and diethyl sulphoxide is polymerized.
