Abstract

Non-corrosive or slightly corrosive aqueous solutions of capillary-active alkyl sulphuric acid ester salts or alkyl or alkylaryl sulphonates are prepared by adding not more than 10 per cent of the weight of the capillary-active substance and not more than 5 per cent of the weight of the solution of a water-soluble silicate, chromate or borate to the aqueous solution of the capillary-active material. The silicate, chromate or borate may be formed in the solution if desired. Alkali and ammonium silicates, chromates and borates and also metasilicates are suitable additives. The corrosive properties of the solution are effectively inhibited at temperatures as high as 100 DEG C. Examples are given of the corrosion inhibiting effect of adding (a) sodium silicate, chromate or borate to a solution of secondary sodium alkyl sulphates obtained by sulphation of alkenes having 10-18 carbon atoms in the molecule and neutralization of the sulphation product with alkali; and (b) sodium silicate to the product obtained by sulpho-chlorination of a de-aromatized gas oil fraction and saponification of the resulting sulpho - chloride with sodium hydroxide. Specification 343,872 is referred to.ALSO:Non-corrosive or slightly corrosive aqueous solutions of capillary-active alkyl sulphuric acid ester salts or alkyl or aralkyl sulphonates are prepared by adding not more than 10 per cent of the weight of the capillary-active substance and not more than 5 per cent of the weight of the solution of a water-soluble silicate, chromate or borate.
