Abstract
581,240. Shelters for aircraft. BELLMAN, N. S. Jan. 14, 1937, No. 1151. [Class 20 (i)] An aeroplane hangar, normally accommodated in a pit below ground revel, is supported on trestles or the like fixed at the bottom of the pit, by means of a counterbalanced framework sliding on the trestles. Figs. 3 and 5 show, in longitudinal and transverse section respectively, the hangar in raised position. Slidably mounted upon two trestles or towers e are a pair of box frames f<2> forming parts of a lattice girder f. Transverse ribs or girders i carried by the girder f support the floor a of the hangar, the roof being supported by transverse girders p. Counterbalance weights h, guided within the towers e, are attached by cables to the frames f', to balance substantially the dead weight of the hangar, and weights h', running in recesses in the walls of the pit, and attached by cables to some or all of the ribs i, are provided to balance added loads. Guide-rollers, not shown, are mounted on extensions on some of the ribs i, e.g., on alternate ones, to engage in vertical guides set in the reinforced concrete walls of the pit, thus ensuring vertical movement of the hangar. Raising and lowering of the hangar may be effected by a motor s, operating the pulleys on the towers e. Stops, not shown, fixed at the edges of the pit, ensure exact levelling of the floor and roof with the ground. The edges of the roof may be provided with supports for canvas curtains or for sliding doors. Ventilators may be formed in the roof, for spaces in the interior of the main girder f, which may be used for offices, workshops &c., and to which access may be had by way of stairs r' below trapdoors in the roof. Tunnels may extend from the pit to remote entrances. The roof may consist of metal sheets laid on steel joists and covered with earth &c. To prevent the position of the sunken hangar from being revealed by wheel &c. tracks, roadways may extend from the pit across the adjoining land, and be continued over the roof by dummy roads.
