Abstract

Articles, e.g. abrasive articles such as grind-wheels, formed of or bonded with a primary aromatic amine-formaldehyde resin to which a polyhalogen compound, excluding a fluorine compound as used in the Specifications listed below, has been added, are made water-resistant by adding to the mix comprising the aromatic amine-formaldehyde resin and the polyhalogen compound of which the article is formed, a substance or substances selected from the following: lead, iron, zinc, copper, the oxides of lead, zinc, and cobalt, melamine, benzidine, sodium silicate, zinc borate, and salts of zinc, cobalt, gold and platinum. Aromatic amines specified are aniline, o-, m- or p-toluidine, diamino diphenylmethane. Polyhalogen bodies specified are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene dichloride, rubber hydrochloride, chlorinated rubber, chlorinated polyisobutylene, any chlorine, bromine, or iodine-substituted paraffin hydrocarbon, e.g. hexachlorethane, tetrachlorpentane, 1.2-diiodoethane, b -butylene bromide, partly chlorinated eicosane, glycerol-a g -dichlorhydrin and the di-monochloracetates of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, substituted polyethylene glycols, or trimethylene glycol. Furfural may be used mixed with the polyhalogen body. Abrasives specified are emery, corundum, dense regular fused alumina, porous white fused alumina, silicon carbide or other hard carbides, quartz, glass, garnet or diamonds. The mix may be cold-moulded, the mould stripped, and the shaped articles baked. In an example, alundum abrasive grain is wet with triglycol dichloride, and mixed with aniline-formaldehyde resin, powdered cryolite, powdered soluble anhydrite and powdered lead; the mix is hot-moulded if zero porosity is required, but otherwise it is cold-moulded and baked. The lead may be replaced by any of the alternative substances listed above, and any of those substances may be added in an amount of 5 per cent by volume to the mix as set forth in any of the examples in the Specifications listed below.
