[Class 53] Apparatus for withdrawing gases from storage batteries 1 that are being charged comprises a valve unit 6 having inlets 5 with tubular connections 4 to the batteries and an outlet 12 leading to a gas collecting main 15 conimunicating with a vessel 20 containing water or other liquid for retaining impurities. A number of valve units may be provided, one for each battery or group of batteries, the gas main 15 having a corresponding number of inlets 14 which can be closed by stoppers 17 when not in use. Each valve unit consists of a casing 6 which may be made of glass, celluloid or other transparent material and which contains a hollow glass ball 11 seating on a rubber ring 10 below which is a chemical or catalytic agent 9 - for removing impurities supported by a second rubber ring. The tubes 4 leading to the batteries may be of rubber and may be fitted with pinch cocks, or the inlets 5 may be provided with valves, for cutting off communication between any of the batteries and the valve units. Gases liberated from the batteries raise the ball 11 and pass through the main 15 into the vessel 20 from which they escape through a vent tube 22. The gas main 15 may be made of rubber-lined steel or other metal.
