Abstract
Artificial protein filaments which have been insolubilized by means of formaldehyde in the presence of a strongly acidified saline solution, are treated with a strong aqueous formaldehyde solution having a pH value between 8.6 and 10.4. The insolubilized filaments are preferably treated in relaxed condition. In an example, a matured alkaline solution of peanut globulin is spun into a bath containing sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate, stretched, immersed on a swift in a saturated sodium chloride solution, and cut into staple fibre. The staple fibre is insolubilized in a bath containing sulphuric acid, formaldehyde and sodium chloride, and is then washed, treated with solutions of sodium cetyl sulphate and sodium carbonate, washed again and finally dried. The fibre has an average strength of 7.7 kgs. per square millimetre. It is then immersed at room temperature for 40 minutes in 40 per cent formalin containing sufficient sodium hydroxide to give a pH value of 9.6. After washing and drying, the fibre has a strength of 12 kgs. per square millimetre. Specification 513,910 is referred to.
