Abstract
Artificial protein threads are produced by extruding an aqueous alkaline solution of a protein into an aqueous coagulating bath containing, per litre, not over 25 grams, preferably 5-15 grams, of sulphuric acid and aluminium sulphate chemically equivalent to at least 400 grams of crystalline aluminium sulphate (Al2(SO4)3.18H2O). The bath preferably also contains sodium sulphate and may also contain formaldehyde. The coagulating baths may be used for hardening and insolubilizing the threads. The freshly extruded threads may be stretched while immersed in the coagulating bath so that stretching is effected during the initial stages of the hardening treatment. Hardening and insolubilizing may be carried out in one operation, preferably at 35-60 DEG C. In an example a solution of milk casein in dilute aqueous caustic soda solution is extruded into a coagulating bath containing, in each litre, 500 grams of aluminium sulphate (calculated as Al2(SO4)3.18H2O), 100 grams of sodium sulphate (calculated as Na2SO4), 10 grams of sulphuric acid and 10 grams of formaldehyde. The freshly extruded threads are then collected into a tow which is stretched 500 per cent while wetted with the coagulating bath and hardened and insolubilized by immersion in a bath of the same composition for 2 hours at 50 DEG C. The tow is then washed in water and dried. In another example the procedure is repeated but 1 per cent of oleic acid is added to the spinning solution so that water-repellent aluminium oleate is formed in the fibres during spinning. Specifications 483,731 and 483,809 are referred to.
