In a centrifugal pump in which the impeller shaft passes through an opening in the easing, this opening is closed'by a plate which is formed integrally with a bearing support and a closure plate for the engine or motor casing the shaft has no other bearing, so that accurate alignment of all the parts is assured. In the arrangement' shown, the casing 11, which is strengthened by radial ribs 27, has an aperture in one side, for insertion of the impeller 31, which is closed by a plate 44, also formed with strengthening ribs ; this plate forms part of a unitary casting which comprises also a plate 54 closing the end of the engine casing 10, a bearing support sleeve 56, and a series of radial webs 53 connecting the various parts. The pump is thus connected to the engine without any possibility of mis-alignment of any parts. The sleeve 56 has seats for two ball-bearings, and its ends are closed by flinger rings and bearing shields ; the ball-bearings have slight axial play, limited by a flange at one end of the sleeve 56 and a retaining ring 69 at the other end, and are separated by a sleeve 62 which provides a lubricant reservoir 63. Leakage, preventing. The inlet and discharge chambers of the pump are separated by flanges 37 on the impeller engaging grooves in the casing 11 and closure plate 44. A stuffing-box is provided where the shaft passes through the plate 44, and the gland 51 of this is split transversely through the bolt-holes so that it is easily inserted in the small space available between the sleeve 56 and plate 44.
