Abstract
579,358. Instrument boards for aircraft and motor vehicles. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. March 22, 1944, No. 5315. [Class 79 (iv)] An instrument board for aircraft or other motor-propelled vehicles comprises a rigid frame secured to the vehicle, a centre panel hinged to the frame along a horizontal edge and two side'panels each hinged along substantially upright edges, whereby each panel may be turned on its hinge to expose the back of the instruments to facilitate inspection or maintenance. The panels are preferably provided with stops to limit their opening movement and turn-buckles or clamps to hold them in normal position against a soft or resilient pad or stop. Fig. 3 shows an aircraft instrument board with side portions 30, 40 swung' forward about hinges 31, 41 to expose the backs of the instruments. Stops 33, 43 limit the forward movement of the side panels and may also fix the panels in their forward positions during maintenance work. The central portion 11 swings forward on a horizontal hinge placed at the lower edge of the instrument board, and the radio panel 24 may also be separately hinged. Fig. 4 shows the assembly in plan; 4 is a rigid rear member and 5 the rigid frame, the two being'held in spaced relationship by a peripheral sheet metal cover 7 ; the side panels 30, 40 are inclined towards the pilot.
