Abstract

579,236. Uniting metal to ceramic materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., NELSON, E. H. and WHITTEMORE, J. Nov. 18, 1942, No. 16342. [Class 36] A seal which is especially applicable for a H P M V electrical discharge device in which electric conductors pass through vitreous walls and comprise a plurality of thin strips 6 lying between a vitreous core 8 and a vitreous jacket 9 collapsed on to the strips and core is constructed with a conducting rod 1 having one end of reduced diameter whereby this reduced end may be passed through a hole 5 in a cruciform holder 3 to which the strips 6 are secured. The end of the rod is expanded to form a rivet, and the rod 1 is then inserted into the narrower part of a vitreous tube 9, and the strips 6 are forced against the wider part of the tube by means of the core 8. The wider part of the tube 9 is then heated and collapsed on to the strips 6 and the core 8, and part of the narrower part of tube 9 is collapsed on to the rod 1. The rod 1 is preferably of tungsten, and the rivet head and strips 6, which are of molybdenum, are cleansed by etching fluid before the sealing operation. Finally an electrode is attached to the rod 1, and a narrow part of the jacket 9 is sealed into an aperture in an envelope 12. In a modification, Fig. 5, the junction piece 3 is dispensed with and each of the strips 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d is formed with an aperture 5 for receiving the reduced end of the conducting rod 1. The strips 6 are welded to tags 7 which serve as external leads.
